Last November, Amazon created a widespread buzz when it announced plans to open its first brick-and-mortar store in New York City in time for the 2014 holiday season. That buzz softened when a retail store failed to materialize.

However, Amazon is now humming in Indiana with the opening of its first physical retail store at Purdue University in West Lafayette. A genuine pickup and drop-off location offers college students quick and less expensive textbook rentals and other products along with free one-day shipping. Amazon staff is present to assist students searching for course-specific books and other products. When customers check out, they can designate the store as the shipping destination and receive email or text notification when their purchase arrives. The store is in Purdue’s Krach Leadership Center, and others are slated to appear elsewhere on campus.

“Whether students are ordering textbooks, laptops, or mac and cheese, Amazon and Purdue are now providing a convenient and secure spot for them to pick up their stuff at hours that work with their schedules,” says Paul Ryder, Amazon vice president of media and student programs.

Amazon also announced plans to open similar locations at the University of Massachusetts and University of California-Davis. The company operates websites catering to students at each of the three schools, with unlimited next-day, on-campus delivery available to Amazon Student Prime members.
