City parks and recreation director Mark Johnston says the R/C racetrack will cost $25,000 and is about 80 percent complete.

“It’s probably a couple of weeks from opening,” Johnston says. “We’re going to move bleachers there, and there will be a charging station so people can charge their remote-control vehicles. It will be an off-road track, and we believe it’s going to be a nice one.”

The city will even provide an R/C truck for residents to borrow and run at the track.

A couple of miles away, at the Foothills Landfill, the city is building a $50,000 archery range and a $75,000 R/C airfield. Johnston says there will be two 800-foot runways, one running north and south, the other east and west.

“They will be paved with millings from city streets that have been resurfaced,” Johnston says. “There will be a solar charging station, and parking that will comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.”

The municipal facilities are funded by “park impact fees” charged to developers but eventually passed on to residents, says City Manager Robert Garza. The city park impact fee is $800 for a new single-family residence. Revenues vary depending on the volume of new construction.

Garza says, “These projects are a great example of how our parks and recreation staff and their advisory board listen to public input and make efforts to meet their needs.”
