New garden railway at Iowa State

Published: September 1, 2015

Work has been completed on an $80,000 model railroad at Reiman Gardens on the Iowa State University campus in Ames, Iowa.

The exhibit assembled by Applied Imagination features local landmarks such as ISU’s Campanile, Beardshear Hall, Morrill Hall, and a replication of the Dinkey Rail line that used to run between the ISU campus and Ames.

“Everything you see in here, from the trestles and bridges to the structures and buildings, is all made out of natural materials,” says Ed Lyon, director of Reiman Gardens. “That fits nicely with what a public garden is about and does.”

Lyon says the rail display will be seasonal, appearing each year just before the holidays. However, the layout was erected early this year due to Applied Imagination’s 2015 schedule.
